Monreale
Today we take a bus at 9 am to visit the twelfth-century Arab-Norman Monreale Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The cathedral was built by Wilhelm II, the grandson of the first Norman King of Sicily, and his statue is by the church entrance.
The fabulous mosaics in the church are the reason to see the church. They cover approximately 70,000 square feet. It’s hard to take good photos of them. The main altar area is being restored and is covered in scaffolding.
We have free time in the afternoon to walk around Palermo. Donna wanted to go to the Archeology Museum.
It’s also nice to walk around the city. We took a narrow street to the harbor area to walk along the shore. Look at how clean this backstreet is.
