Corleone
Today we start at 8:30 am for a bus ride to Palermo with a stop in Corleone for a walking tour and lunch.
The area we drove through is mainly an agricultural area. Wheat is a popular crop. The area is dry, so it’s winter wheat and about 80% of the crop was harvested. This area of Sicily can be scenic.
Our walking tour of Corleone had a theme of the mafia. The town really doesn’t want to be known for the mafia. But for a time period, the local mafia in Corleone was in control of the mafia in the country.
Our tour ended near a statue of Bernardino Verro who was killed by the mafia in 1915 in that square.
The Church of San Martino is the cathedral in town, next to the square where Verro was killed.
After a long lunch, we continued our journey to Palermo through the countryside. It is a bit greener as we get closer to Palermo, there are more vineyards and fruit trees.
After arriving in Palermo, we went for a short walking tour in the area to see what is close to the hotel and identify some restaurants for us to eat on our own tonight.
Our guide treated us to some limonella which does not have alcohol in it, the limoncello is pretty potent.
After our big lunch and sitting on the bus for most of the day, we didn’t want a big dinner, so we split a sfilatino with ham, mozzarella and pistachio pesto. Sfilatino is pizza on a French bread crust.
