Today we have one long game drive in Chobe National Park. Our drive goes across the park, we’ll stop to eat lunch and then come back.

Our guide mistook this juvenile Bateleur for an adult Brown Snake-Eagle. The adult Bateleur looks very different. I’m impressed with the identifications that the guides do. They make very few mistakes. I had uploaded this photo to iNaturalist.org and the experts there caught the mistake. The only visible difference is the base of the beak.

These lions had killed a juvenile giraffe and were sleeping near the kill site. They would be able to eat for a few days, so will hang around and guard it.

The Vervet monkeys showed up at our lunch spot towards the end of our meal, trying to steal some food. The guides made some noise and waved their hands and chased after them.

After a rest time in the heat of the day, our guide had a local member of the San tribe come in to give a talk about traditional life in the bush. He doesn’t normally dress this way, but came in traditional dress. He gave a demonstration of making a fire by spinning a stick on wood with some dry grass, but had quite a bit of difficulty in getting the fire to start.
