Basseterre, St. Kitts
We wanted to go to the beach on St. Kitts, and had originally decided to go to Cockleshell beach on the south end of the island, but the wind was fairly strong from the south and we were worried about the swell being bad. We decided at the last minute to try South Friar’s Beach which might be a little more protected.
Taxis are expensive in the Caribbean, so we asked and found out about the option for shared taxis. It’s on the right side of the port building. It was $7 per person to South Friar’s Beach. The taxi asked us when we wanted to get picked up to return to the ship. Our group chose 2 pm.
I went out first into water to find the reef and the waves stirred up a lot of sand making the visibility poor and pushed you around.
Donna went out after me and struggled with the poor visibility from the stirred up sand and the waves pushing her around. There were some sea urchins along the top side of the reef, you really didn’t want to be pushed into them. A big wave knocked her over when she was getting out of the water and got sand over everything.
I went out a second time and swam the entire length of the beach and back, almost 1/2 a mile.
I got lucky when I was approaching this fan coral and saw an octopus drop down and hide below it. If it had been already hiding, I wouldn’t have spotted it. One arm is purplish-red with some yellow on it coiled around some green.
