Donna has been interested in visiting the Amazon River and has been watching this cruise for several years. We decided to try it this year as it wasn’t on the schedule for next year.
The cruise was on the Volendam, a ship that we’ve sailed on before through the Panama Canal. It’s the smallest ship in the Holland America fleet, and about the largest ship you can sail up the Amazon River. So if they retire this ship and its sister ship, the Zandam, Holland America probably won’t offer this cruise again. Or they’ll have to go at the end of the wet season when the river is higher.
It is a 28-day cruise from Ft. Lauderdale to the Amazon and back. At the end the captain announced that we had traveled 7641 nautical miles.
