Grapevine Hills

This was our last day in the park. We had stayed overnight in Terlingua on the west side of the park, so drove the Ross Maxwell drive back through the park to leave through Persimon Gap on the north side of the park.

We stopped to hike at the Lower Burro Mesa Pour-off trail and the Grapevine Hills trail on the way out.

The Lower Burro Mesa Pour-off trail leads to the bottom of a cliff under a pour-off, a place where the rain runs off the cliff. You can see that quite a bit of water comes through here when it’s wet.

Then we hiked the Grapevine Hills trail which leads out to this balanced rock.

We got lucky with the daytime weather at Big Bend. It was cloudy many days, which helped keep the temperatures in check, but it didn’t rain. Later that afternoon as we drove home, and the next day as we drove from northern Texas the rest of the way home, it rained most of the way.
