Crystal Sound

We sailed inside Lavoisier Island up to the continent near Prospect Point in Crystal Sound overnight. As we got near in the morning during breakfast there were many distractions, passing penguins and seals resting on the sea ice.

This landing was the furthest south this company has done. Just beyond 66° south.

The Blue-eyed Shag is also known as the Antarctic Cormorant. There were numerous shags in the area and I got a few good photos.

There was a Skua nesting near our landing spot, it had a chick.

There was lots of blue glacial ice in the area as well as sea ice.

We had a few minutes of silence while on land, I could hear the dripping water as the snow melted under our feet and ran down to the sound a few hundred feet down the hill. I could also hear the ice berglets bumping into each other in the sound. A naturalist nearby said he heard Adelie penguins. We didn’t see them from land, but I saw a pair on the zodiac ride through the ice on the way back to the ship.
