Iguazu Argentina
Our second day at Iguazu Falls was on the Argentine side. We did three walks this day. We started the day by taking the little train to the last station and the Devil’s Throat trail.

We flew from Buenos Aires to Iguazu and went directly to the Brazil side of the falls. After a brief stop to get a late lunch, we walked a trail down to the base of the falls.
Read More…Drake Passage Northbound
The expectations set by the crew were for a moderate crossing of the Drake passage. It started out quite nice, with gently rolling seas and a bit of a tailwind.
Some staff members considered our crossing the Drake “Lake”, others thought it was only close to a “Lake” crossing. It was very pleasant, easy to walk around outside. On the morning of the 5th around 10 am we got a little snow, the only snow I saw fall on the trip.

In the morning, we stopped at Hannah Point, on Livingston Island in the Shetland Islands. It was originally planned to be an early landing as the wind was supposed to pick up by mid-morning. That didn’t happen, and another ship canceled their afternoon visit, so we ended up spending a gorgeous day there.

In the afternoon, we stopped at Mikkelson Harbor, which was an old whaling landing. There are a number of whale bones left there.

In the morning, we stopped at Cierva Cove, near the Argentine Primavera base. The base is on an island rich with lichens, so no landing, just a zodiac tour, as they want to protect these slow growing organisms.

In the afternoon, we stopped at Port Lockroy, which is a restored British Antarctic station just around the corner from Damoy Point run by the British Antarctic Trust. They have a museum and a shop. They have five employees here to run the museum, shop and post office. You can mail a postcard from here. It goes to another station and out from there.

We sailed outside Biscoe Island to the Neumayer Channel overnight. We stopped at Damoy Point on the west side of Wiencke Island in the morning.

We sailed inside Lavoisier Island up to the continent near Prospect Point in Crystal Sound overnight. As we got near in the morning during breakfast there were many distractions, passing penguins and seals resting on the sea ice.

We saw some humpback whales this morning after breakfast. This day has a very loose plan, get south of the Antarctic Circle, and see what we can do.
